Product Description

"This picture book reads like an instant classic.... Oh, yes!" raved Kirkus Reviews in a starred review.

Young children will delight in repeating the refrain "OH, NO!" as one animal after another falls into a deep, deep hole in this lively read-aloud. This simple and irresistible picture book by hugely popular picture book creators—Candace Fleming and Caldecott medalist Eric Rohmann—feels like a classic-in-the-making. Fans of Rohmann''s Caldecott Medal-winning My Friend Rabbit, will be thrilled to see a new book created in the same expressive and comical style.

A Look Inside Oh No!

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-Rohmann''s relief prints bring an exuberant humor to Fleming''s rhythmic read-aloud. When an elastic-looking frog falls into a deep hole ("Ribbit-oops!"), a timid mouse, lugubrious loris, resourceful sun bear, and jaunty monkey all tumble down after him during unsuccessful rescue attempts. Fleming''s bouncing rhymes and repeated lines-set in comfortably large, rounded text-entice readers into an enjoyable delivery complete with snarled sound effects and onomatopoeic exclamations. The repetitive "Oh, no!" allows listeners to join in with the engaging text as the animals face a lurking tiger eager to snack on the helpless group. Rohmann knows to leave swathes of open space in his full-spread illustrations, focusing attention on his expressive, energetic animals in their vibrant safari palette of bright browns, tans, and greens. In a satisfying conclusion, the refrain returns as the tiger, now stuck in the hole, asks the released animals if they will help him clamber out. Oh, no!-Robbin E. My toddler loves this book, and I do too. This is a really fun book to read aloud as it repeats the "oh no" as one animal after another falls into a deep dark hole while the tiger lurks, waiting to pounce. The turn of circumstances at the ending is lots of fun. I can see this being great for a range of ages, starting as early as 1 year old (my toddler liked it starting at that age). The book has good rhythm and repetition so it can captivate even the smallest listeners.

This is a great book to read out loud. The repetition keeps the reader and listener anticipating the next victim of the hole, and gives the listeners a part in the story. The pictures with the tiger lurking makes the reader await what the tiger is up to. The elephant is the hero and the last pictures shows that the tiger lives to torment his neighbors another day. Oh No! is an exciting tradional story with a happy ending for all.

I thought the illustrations were creative and enhanced the storyline. I can see the children enjoying the book. I can also see teachers, librarians and parents using this book to foster sequencing skills and imagination. The book can be interactive, by having the children "read along" when the phrase "Oh, No!" comes along. I see many a flannel boards created to go along with the book. Be sure to look at the end cover page. Enjoy.

My husband spotted this book when he was browsing at a bookstore and suggested getting it as we''re expecting our first baby. He mostly wanted it because of the slow loris, so I indulged. I have had lots of experience with children in various situations and so have a good idea of the sort of book that appeals to kids - and I know this will be one of our child''s favourites. Not only are the pictures engaging, but the rhythm of the poetry will surely capture the imagination of any child, and will be one they will want to memorize and read over and over. I hope it''s available in board book form soon, as it, like "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," is the sort of book that would appeal to a very wide range of ages. We''ve now gotten it for our niece, and look forward to reading it to her.
